There is plenty of information about the importance of mindfulness in everyday life. I recently discovered a website which defines mindfulness as "maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment" (http://greatergood.berkeley.edu).
Mindlessness, on the other hand is "without intelligence, senseless...unmindful or heedless." (www.dictionary.com) The online Thesaurus gives many alternative words for mindless, including silly, thoughtless, senseless, thoughtless, forgetful, unmindful, unintelligent, and witless, (www.thesaurus.com), to name but a few.
Viewed from the perspective of clear definitions, there appears to be a clear divide between mindlessness and mindfulness. I am not sure if there is a true chasm between the two states, as it may be more of a continuum and dependent on the particular situation.
Here are a few examples of my own experiences with mindlessness and mindfulness:
Mindlessness
- worrying about something that I can do nothing about
- binge eating
- swimming lengths of the pool or lake without thinking
- over reacting to various situations
- driving without awareness of the speed I was travelling
- lack of focus
Mindfulness
- realizing that I am worrying about something, and then consciously "shelving" those thoughts
- being acutely aware of everything that I are eating and drinking
- purposeful focus on certain aspects of swimming strokes
- being conscious of the thoughts and feelings associated with various situations, and controlling reactions
- being fully present when driving a vehicle
- focus
These are a few of the lessons learned. Fortunately, I am beginning to understand the causes and effects of my moodiness, and taking steps to mindfully make changes when possible.
