LIving in the NOW!

Now is all we have!

A old friend once said to me that the two most interesting and exciting parts of life are anticipation and  memory.  At the time, I thought she was right. However, with age and experience came wisdom.  Today I believe that the most important part of life is the present.  The now is what we have.
I am thankful for this insight.  It has made me stop and smell the roses, enjoy the moment, and appreciate where I am, who I am with, what I am doing.  I understand that my days are numbered and that soon my best-before-date will pass.
I am not worried about the future, nor am I regretting the past.  Life is too short to waste precious moments lost in thought somewhere other that in the now. I am learning to turn off the voices and pictures in my mind that could lead  to feelings of sadness, anxiety, guilt, frustration or anger.  And for that, I am thankful.

Until next time,

What I Will Miss

Our Grandson at Nine Months

Life is full of decisions!  As I prepare for a trip to India, I am thinking about the people and things that I am going to miss.  Once in a while I think to myself, "You are crazy- you are giving up too much."  Then the other side of my brain takes over and I look at the benefits.

Although it is too late to write pro/con lists, I need to take the time today, because I have it, to consider the consequences of our quick decision.

Pro
  • Opportunity to travel to another part of the world
  • Renewal of relationships with good friends
  • Ability to contribute on a daily basis to the lives of young children
  • Escape from the spring time black flies and inconsistent weather (today it is snowing!)
Con
  • Missing family and friends in Canada, especially our grandson and neighbours, sisters, brothers and mother
  • Missing out on opportunities to work as an occasional teacher for the next two months
  • Possible discomfort in another foreign country

I remember from my the childhood some of my mother's key phrases that have helped to shape my attitude and personality.  She would often say, "Hurry up and wait...." and "Good things are worth the wait."

Recently my brother passed on this message about driving, but I believe it is also a good one for living, "Patience and forgiveness".

Lately my motto has been, "Patience and persistence."

There is a common thread here and I hope that I get it right.  I tend to hurry through life waiting for good things to happen, but it is more important to be patient, persistent, and forgiving (especially with oneself), while waiting.

Now the wait is on for a visa to travel India.  Friends of ours are living there and we are going for a two or three month visit.  We see this as a great opportunity to explore a new culture and contribute to a community.

This increased wait time here at home will give us an opportunity to spend time with some of our family members before heading out.  Although three months does not sound like a long time to us, we are going to miss some special people while we are away.

  • our grandson, who is now just over 9 months old
  • my sister, who is recovering from cancer treatment
  • my brother, who lives relatively close to home and recovering from a broken leg
  • my mom, who has been struggling with a few health issues
  • my husband's family, who also live close-by
  • our neighbours, who are wonderfully supportive
  • co-workers at the various schools where I am presently working
Pro and con considered, as one of my close friends says, "It is what it is."  And I plan to make the most of the experience!

Until next time,

Bee Rich

A New Adventure!

Life is good.  Life is full of surprises.  Life happens.  In our busy world, sometimes it is a good idea to stop and say a prayer of thanksgiving.  Today I am thankful.  My husband and I are planning a trip in the very near future to a place where we never dreamt we would have the opportunity to travel.
We are going to India!  I was able to take a short term leave of absence from occasional teaching and will spend the next two months in a country that I have only read about in books, magazines, newspapers and on the Internet.  I have heard so many positive things from others about their travel in this far away land.  I am getting excited.
The next week will be a whirlwind of activity, but I am looking forward...

Until next time,

Bee Rich

The Next Step?

Yes I can do it!

Today is a good day!  It is a sunny and cool Wednesday afternoon following the long Easter weekend.  I was called to teach yesterday and today for only half a day, but both were at the closest school to our home.
Earlier this week I applied for a position on the occasional teaching list with the secondary panel of the same board where I am presently working.  It sounded like a good idea at the time.  However, today I received the following email:

The School Board would like to thank you for submitting your application to the position of Secondary Occasional Teacher....We received nearly 400 application packages and we will be shortlisting these application packages on Thursday, April 12, 2012. If you are selected for an interview you can expect to receive an e-mail from The School Board on either Friday, April 13, 2012 or Monday, April 16, 2012....If you do not receive an e-mail inviting you to an interview, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in working with The School Board, and wish you all the best.

What are the chances that this is my next step?  Slim to none, I predict. And yet, there glimmers inside me the hope that this might work out, increasing my exposure within the board and the opportunity to work more hours at a job that I love. Time will tell!

Until next time,

Bee Rich

Easter is Awesome!

We just arrived home from a quick trip to see our grandson and his parents.  I forgot my camera, so on the way home I sent my son a text from my new cell phone asking for a recent picture of the boy.  He complied with the following shots.  This boy was Heaven sent and we are so fortunate to have him in our lives.  His parents are awesome, too!

Celebrating Easter and the Masters!

His smile hardly ever fades!

The ABC Puzzle/Play mat

Peacefully asleep!
Thank you to my son and his beautiful wife for the pictures...

Oh, and Grandpa solved the Easter Gift dilemma.  A stuffed giraffe (Big Sophie) for his African themed room arrived on Easter Eve.  It evoked another lovely smile and some playtime fun with grandma and grandpa.

Until next time,

Good Friday Morning!

Early this morning I went for a long walk up and down our road.  Even though the thermometer indicated  a mere one degree Celsius, the sun was so bright and shiny that I had to shed my toque, gloves, scarf and unzip my jacket. With two dogs in tow (or were they towing me?) I made my way along the woods looking for signs of Spring.  I was not disappointed.  Trees are budding, plants are popping up, and some cottagers have arrived to spend the long weekend at the lake.

I called my mother to say, "Good Friday morning!"  Number one son sent a text asking if he had left his golf jacket here. Number one daughter will no doubt call and wish us a happy day later today because she knows that we are travelling to see number one son, daughter-in-law, and grandson tomorrow.  I will try to contact my siblings who celebrate birthdays in April. I am thankful for my family of origin, for my sense of responsibility and independence.

Easter Weekend- a time of love, family, and traditions like ham and scalloped potatoes, egg dying, and taking out the bunny decorations.  The baseball season begins, the hockey season is moving into the play-offs, and the Masters are playing golf.  It is a changeable date- the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.

But despite the changes, it is always a busy time of year reminding us of the death and resurrection of Jesus and renewal of our spirits.

Until next time,

Bee Rich

Happy Easter to YOU!

Happy Easter Holydays...

I am really looking forward to this weekend.  After a four day week of teaching, I am ready to spend some time with some of the special people in my life.  These two pictures show scenes from our last family get-together in March.  You see our daughter, grandson and daughter-in-law reuniting after several months.  Below is a picture of one of the special gifts the little one received from his aunt.  It is a multi-sensory toy.  It sounds wonderful, looks amazing, and feels soft and cuddly.  The best part is that it moves along the floor with flashing lights and the little one crawls after it.
My girls and grandson!

The toy!

Getting ready for the weekend I am wondering what to give our grandson for Easter?  I sent grandpa to the store today to pick up something for our him, but grandpa came home empty handed.  Hmm.  I was thinking of a bunny or something but we will have to see...

On another Easter topic, I saw a wonderful idea at one of the schools yesterday.  It starts with a cup of soil and a few jelly beans.  First you plant the jelly beans.  Then you wait a few days.  Eventually the jelly beans grow into beautiful lollipops.  I love it and can't wait to try it with my own class next year (if all goes well)!

Just so I don't forget, I am documenting it here in pictures.

First, you plant the jelly beans...

Three days later, surprise!!!

Until next time,

Happy Easter and

Bee Rich
